U.S. Capitol - The Trolley Transit

Trolley Transom on the US Capitol Grounds before conservation and restoration treatment. In the photo on the left is United States Senator Arlen Specter from Pennsylvania walking past the Trolley Transom as it is being tagged and documented before removing to our 30 thousand sq. ft. facility in Lancaster Pa. The treatment will include a newly fabricated steel roof along with other fabricated elements

Each section was measured and tagged before conservation and restoration.

The treatment of existing works such as this Trolley Transom requires different methods and approach with different ethical constraints.

Documentation and photographs were of upmost importance before removal of the Trolley Transom for conservation and restoration treatment.

Initial technical examinations must be made to identify materials and ascertain the mechanism of deterioration. The technician is labeling all areas the conservators have identified. The original roof was painted with lead paint, therefore the roof was disposed of and a new roof fabricated and painted.

The condition assessments of the Trolley Transom once completed, the removal stage begins for shipping to ART facility in Lancaster PA.

Each steel or iron I Beam is marked and coded before removal and the conservation/restoration treatment.

Each section is delicately and methodically sectioned off for shipment. All information is inventoried. Written and photographic documentation is required for reference for the technician performing the conservation & restoration treatment.

While the sections of the Trolley Transom are being removed wooden I-Beams were constructed & erected for supports during the removal process.

Installing the Trolley Transom

The Iron Trolley Transom after the conservation and restoration treatment is now anchored in place and ready for the new fabricated copper roof.
